If you're in someplace like LA, from what I've seen on who has received aid and who hasn't, I might not apply after about $150,000 (which really isn't much here) unless you have several kids in private school (then they all must apply at their schools), paying for a child's college, supporting elderly relative, unusual expenses. Elsewhere, the threshold is likely lower, not that there is any defined threshold. It really depends on the school. Also, if a parent is a student or not working full time or not gainfully employed, an appropriate income will very likely be attributed to them.

Sometimes applying for financial aid can make a difference in admissions, even if they state it doesn't. Some schools will say that if you apply for aid your application goes into a different pile (tougher admissions). Some schools don't like to be turned down when they offer a space, so if you've applied for aid and won't get it, they might not make the offer.

Most schools will say that they expect parents to understand that they must make education a priority, and sacrifice, like the families that donate, to provide a private school education. I know some schools will give you ideas of how you can afford to pay what they deem your portion, like cutting back on vacations, etc.

Also, families in the exact same situation don't necessarily get offered the same aid, it depends on what the kid brings to the school. Like a kid with high 90s ISEE scores was offered 1/2 tuition, but a classmate from the same private middle school, same grades, lower ISEE scores, same or less family income, received no offer of aid. (I really wish there was merit aid without financial considerations, it's only fair since the top students bring in more students with their stats, matriculation, etc.)

Schools have to be very careful now, because in this economy those who are donating are getting ticked off at those who seem to have a similar lifestyle yet are receiving aid.

Good luck!

I suggest asking the office which administers the financial aid program at the school these questions. Make an appointment to talk with the financial aid advisor and discuss your financial situation with this person.

It depends on what type of teacher you want to be and what they are after.

Private school tends to pay more but not that much.
Public school is more rigid with the rules and regulations.

You get more time for yourself in a public school.
Private schools tend to have a lot more extra stuff that is out of normal hours.

The reporting systems in private schools vary considerably where in a public school it is standardised.

Yes, public school teachers can become private school teachers. Some of my son's teachers began as public school teachers.

A private school teacher at a good school makes about the same as a public school teacher, but the job may be much nicer. Depending on the school, they may make more. At some private schools, like small Catholic or Christian schools, the pay can be less. But one reason why good private school tuition has gone way up the last few years was because teacher's pay has gone up to match public school pay. It is often the biggest expense for a school.

You will have the best chance of getting a teaching job at a top private school if you have a masters or doctoral degree from a top college. At my son's private high school (considered a top prep school), 75+% of the teachers have masters or doctoral degrees, quite a few from ivy league colleges. At my son's small K - 8, many teachers have advanced degrees, and several graduated from the ivy league. They teach for the money, aren't wealthy, love their jobs. We also had many long term teachers, 20 - 30 years, some sent their kids to the school, who then came back to teach, along with other alumni. Nice community feeling, well behaved kids, smaller classes than public school.

Good luck!

It depends what school you have in mind. Your small local, catholic private school probably has undistinguished teachers who may be not as good as the public school teacher. The funds the schools have to pay these teachers are less than the amount the state dishes to the public school, and in truth, public school teachers have a much tougher job, because they have to grade 66 students' works (22 students in 3 classes for a term... yikes!), lecture to them everyday, and make sure that no one is failing even though there are a lot of mediocre students in the classroom. However schools in the ten schools organization and a few other prestigious private schools scattered across the nation bring out a lot of heavy artillery to convince Ph.D's and other teachers with advanced degrees to teach at their schools. I remember from one article in our newspaper that said that the average teacher's wage at our school was in the $70,000-$80,000 range and that the head of the science department made about $110,000 dollars. Don't forget that the teachers receive free room and board in a luxurious two or three bedroom apartment and enjoy the benefits of college professors (tenure, sabbatical, paid leave, etc.) Compare that to the $50,000 average for high school teachers (which includes boarding school teacher salaries). I would estimate that private school teachers at top school make about $20000 more than a regular teacher, but the hardships of getting of advanced degrees and the cost justify this pay raise.

Let me just tell you right now that stereotypes you have heard about Private Schools are not true, the kids there are not snobs, they are just like normal public school kids, they cuss, some do drugs, some party etc. Also a very very small amount of families at private schools are rich. To answer your question, public schools are funded by taxpayers, not a small group of tuition paying parents, therefore, public school teachers make much more than private school teachers. Shocking? Find some statistics that disprove me, you wont find any.

Private schools vary greatly as to how many kids. For high schools (grades 9 - 12), some have about 100 kids per grade, so 400. Some might have 300 kids per grade, so 1200. There are also very small schools, with maybe 30 kids per grade, so 120 total. There are also larger schools, maybe 575 students per grade, so 2300 total.

The schools my son applied to have between 400 and 700 for grades 9 - 12.

Public schools also vary greatly. High schools in my area (L.A.) have from 600 to 5300 students, with 1200 - 2500 being common.

My private school has about two thousand students. The reason public schools have more students is because the campuses are bigger.

i go to a Christian private school and I, personally, really like it. However there are some things that I dont like about it. I like how there aren't as many people, and the teachers seem to be nicer, and since there's usually less people in private schools they can usually control the class better. The biggest problem I have in my school is, since the class is smaller, if someone is mean to you or decides that they dont like you, its nearly impossible to get away from them.
I like private school, and you shouldnt worry, I'm sure you'll be great! =D

DUUUDE stop worrying. in my oppinion, private schools are much better than public.the teachers and students are much more nicer but be careful about the snobby rich, popular ppl. they MIGHT not be as friendly. and the shutting up in classes... that would depend on whether the teacher actually cares about talking in class or not. and ppl dont vandalize things so it's clean. Trust me. i know. and there arent as much fights and stuff. and DO NOT EVER EVER say rude words... not even hell, gay... the teachers HATE those students and you might even get kicked out... honestly... i got detention for saying dang it.
so as long as you mind your manners and be nice, private school will be a breeze
