The following are a few SSAT Math Sample Questions.  You can find hundreds of interactive math questions including detailed explanations covering over 100 math topics at www.privateschoolexam.com.

What is the perimeter of a rectangle with side lengths of 8 and 3?

a. 6

b. 11

c, 16

d. 22

e. 25

The perimeter of a rectangle can be determined by doubling both the side lengths and adding the results.

Thus, the answer is (D) 22.

The base angles of an isosceles triangle are:

Perpendicular

Congruent

Complimentary

Supplementary

parallel

The base angles of an isosceles triangle have to have the same measure, which means they are congruent.

Thus, the answer is (B) congruent.

How many points are necessary to define a line?

a. One

b. Two

c. Three

d. Four

e. Infinite

Any two points can define a line between them and extending from them. Note that a line contains an infinite number of points, but only two are necessary to define one.

Thus, the answer is (B) two.

Two cars start from the same place two hours apart. The first car travels at 10 miles per hour and the second travels at 15 miles per hour. How many hours after the second car leaves does it take for the second car to catch up?

a. 1

b. 2

c. 3

d. 4

e. 5

In the first two hours, the first car travels 20 miles while the second car stays at the starting point. In the ensuing hours, the second car begins to travel and slowly catches up. The first hour after the second train leaves, it is at 15 miles while the first car is at 30 miles. In the next hour, the first will be at 30 and the second at 40. Next hour, the first will be at 45 and the second at 50. Finally, in the fourth hour after the second car leaves, they will be even at 60 miles from the starting point.

Thus, the answer is (D) 4.

What interest rate is necessary to get $1000 in interest over 2 years on a $10000 investment?

a. 4%

b. 5%

c. 6%

d. 7%

e. 8%

$1000 is 10% of $10000, which is 5% per year if the interest is paid all at once. Thus, we have to confirm that 4% is not sufficient to provide $1000 interest. The first year will provide $400 at 4% interest, and the second year will provide $416, which means a total of $816, which is not enough to meet the conditions.

Thus, the answer is (B) 5%.

The sum of 14 consecutive integers is 217. What is the sixth number in the series?

a. 13

b. 14

c. 15

d. 16

e. 17

Since we have 14 consecutive integers, the average of all of them will be the average of the sixth and seventh numbers (or the sixth number plus 0.5, since they are all consecutive). The average of the numbers is 15.5 (217/14 = 15.5) so the sixth number is 15 and the seventh is 16.

Thus, the answer is (C) 15.

Paul needs to be at a meeting in 20 minutes. If his office is 15 miles away, how fast does he need to drive to get there on time, in miles per hour?

a. 15

b. 20

c. 30

d. 40

e. 45

Since Paul has to drive 15 miles in 20 minutes, he would theoretically have to drive 45 miles in 60 minutes, or 45 miles per hour, to get to his destination on time.

Thus, the answer is (E) 45.
